Cigarette litter is the most commonly found type of litter worldwide and can harm our environment, wildlife, and communities. Through Breathe New Hampshire’s Bag the Butts™ program, individuals, schools, and community groups can take action by organizing a cleanup and helping raise awareness about the impact of tobacco waste.
Organizing a Bag the Butts™ cleanup is easy:
Pick a place in your community where cigarette litter is a concern, such as a neighborhood, school, park, or public area.
Select a date, gather volunteers, and organize your cleanup activities.
Contact Breathe New Hampshire before your cleanup to receive your free Bag the Butts™ toolkit, which includes supplies and information to help make your event a success.
Follow the recycling guidelines included in your toolkit. After your cleanup, contact us to request a FREE shipping label so collected cigarette litter can be properly recycled instead of sent to a landfill.
Take photos and share your cleanup with us at info@BreatheNH.org or tag Breathe New Hampshire on social media.
Bag the Butts™ is more than a cleanup—it is an opportunity to start conversations about the impact of tobacco waste and the importance of protecting the places where we live, work, and play.
Electronic vapor products require different disposal methods than cigarette litter. Contact your local transfer station or waste facility for guidance on proper disposal of household hazardous materials.
Breathe New Hampshire provides resources and toolkits to support community cleanups but does not organize or oversee cleanup events. Participating organizations are responsible for supervising youth and adult volunteers and ensuring a safe cleanup experience.
